Lab Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds, also called man-made diamonds, have the same chemical composition as natural diamonds. The main difference is how they're made. Natural diamonds form over millions of years deep within the Earth, but lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled labs, imitating the natural process but in a much shorter time.

How are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?

Lab-grown diamonds are created using two advanced technologies: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

In the HPHT method, scientists recreate the extreme heat and pressure found deep within the Earth's crust, where natural diamonds form. They place a diamond seed into pure carbon and subject it to high temperatures and pressures in a controlled environment, similar to how natural diamonds grow.

CVD is a more modern method that's also highly effective. It involves growing diamonds in a vacuum chamber. A diamond seed from a natural diamond is placed in the chamber, which is then filled with gases like hydrogen and methane. A microwave beam breaks down these gases, and the carbon atoms attach to the diamond seed. Throughout the process, the diamond seed needs to be polished to remove any rough edges. This process is relatively quick and doesn't affect the quality of the diamond, which is ready in a matter of weeks.

What is the difference between Lab and Natural Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds look almost identical. They both sparkle and are equally durable and hard. Plus, you can get lab-grown diamonds certified by reputable labs like GIA and IGI, just like natural diamonds.

The only way to distinguish between them is by using special equipment to detect their crystal growth patterns.

Are Lab Grown Diamond Certified?

All our lab-grown diamonds above 0.30ct come with certification. The grading process for lab-grown diamonds is the same as for natural diamonds, focusing on the 4 C's: Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat. Each step of the grading process is taken very seriously to ensure all diamonds are given the correct grade. The certificate will then state if any further heat treatment has been used on the diamond and whether it is a HPHT diamond or CVD diamond.

However, please note GIA certificates are online documentation only. This can be downloaded for your personal records from GIA website. IGI Lab Grown Diamonds will come with a physical certificate.

What is the price comparison between Lab Grown and Natural Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds get at 85-90% lower than natural diamonds of similar quality. There price is based on 4C’s Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight, just like natural diamonds. Since they're not mined, they don't have the additional costs associated with mining, which makes them much more affordable for buyers.

What is the resale value of Lab Grown Diamonds in the future?

It's important to be transparent about lab-grown diamonds' resale value. Unlike natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds do not have good resale value.
